As part of our October 18 dinner and auction event “Mercy on the Move to…”, Mercy Holistic Ministry featured a moderated panel discussion on homeless solutions. The panelists included Caity Maple, Sacramento City councilwoman; Joseph Smith, Hope Cooperative Director of Housing; and Scott Thurmond, a project manager for numerous housing projects in the region. Moderator Rev. Paul Ferguson is from the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod district office.
Two panelists shared lived experience with homelessness and the power of encouraging words from strangers who recognized them and treated them like a valued human being vs the all-too-common reaction of ignoring them. One panelist said, “Even Jesus built relationships with the people society avoided.” Real change begins with relationships, not paperwork.
Federal funding cuts are imminent to the extent that one third of government budgets will be cut in 2026, placing more reliance on private faith-based support and other non-profit organizations to help meet the needs of the homeless. The panel emphasized that no organization can do it alone.
Churches and nonprofits form a shared safety net for people experiencing homelessness. The panel cited the larger issues: wages, mental health access, policy barriers, and housing pathways and emphasized that true reform begins locally through coordinated community action.
Panelists also described obstacles like mental health struggles, economic barriers, lack of structure, and limited coordination. Mercy Holistic Ministry stands in the gaps where systems fail and people fall through. The panelists recognized that MHM is operating with the selfless motive of serving with the love of Christ.
Our team goes directly into the community, showing compassion and dignity. Despite the unpredictability of 2025, we have seen movement, growth, and healing. In 2026, with the help of the wider community and God’s guidance, we will celebrate stronger partnerships, expanded services, and transformed lives.
